For those interested in moving away from the IBM i green screen and using a GUI-based tool, IBM offers Rational Developer for IBM i, an eclipse-based tool that supports RPG, COBOL and Java development for IBM i systems, as well as CL programs, DDS, screen designs, et cetera. Before taking the “blue pill” and assuming all will be good, be sure that you have the supported computing environment for this tool.
Rational Developer for IBM i only supports IBM i systems from v6.1 and up. So yes, most modern systems. On the client system, RHEL, Ubuntu and SuSE are supported in 32-bit and 64-bit packages. Of course Windows is supported too, but this is a blog for the UNIX guy trying to get a grip on IBM enterprise systems.
